“Ex- Seafarer Migrates to
the North
Revealing PM secrets”
Hello,
...my name’s Barry Avery,
I’m married with three sons
and I live in the scenic Colne Valley of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. I
originate from the cathedral city of Salisbury, Wiltshire and moved
north in 1986 shortly after leaving the Royal Navy having
served eleven years.
I have experienced the highs and lows of life, both the good
times and bad. These have ranged from being fortunate enough to have travelled
the world and experienced many of the wonderful sights, to cheating
death twice in a matter of minutes and also witnessing the poverty
and depravation in the less fortunate parts of the world.
My varied careers have spanned the Armed Forces, retail management,
finally settling with IT project and business consultancy. As mentioned
earlier I served eleven years in Her Majesty's Royal Navy. I joined
immediately after leaving school in 1975 and served until 1986. During
this time I was decorated with two campaign service medals.
Most importantly I have learnt from the experiences and challenges
that were put in front of me. They have helped me to try and keep everything
in perspective, in particular the all important work-life balance.
I served for 6 months in Moscow Camp, Belfast in Northern Ireland during
1981 at the height of the IRA hunger strike campaign. I also saw active
service in the Falklands conflict aboard HMS Coventry during 1982.
Regrettably, I lost a number of my close friends and colleagues as
my ship was sunk in action near Pebble Island with the loss of 19 lives.
However, it must be said that most clouds do have a silver
lining. I returned home from the Falklands aboard the luxury liner the QE II,
to serve briefly at my native shore base HMS Dryad, near Portsmouth,
where I met my future wife, Sarah.
Since 1986 I have forged successful careers in a wide variety of industries.
Initially a promising career in retail management with Bejam was exchanged
for a career in the IT industry as a trainee computer programmer /
analyst. This eventually evolved into a role as a product-marketing
manager via technical specialist and support manager.
In 1998 I decided to take the plunge and form my own company,
Endeavour Strategies Ltd., with the aim of providing project and business consultancy
services. I did this with the main objective of servicing what I saw
as a big gap in the market of delivering IT projects successfully.
My first contract was a real baptism of fire. A management inter-face
role between Andersen Consulting and British Telecom during the critically
important stages of launching Cellnet, later to become BT Cellnet and
finally O2. This led to other significant consultancy roles delivering
business critical projects for an impressive array of FTSE-100 companies
including British Telecom, Lloyds
TSB, Intelligent Finance, Halifax
BOS and Abbey.
Successfully delivering these projects has also involved working closely
with leading suppliers including Cisco, Sun
Microsystems, Unisys, Honeywell and
consultancies such as Deloitte & Touche. Click here to find out more about the services I offer and how to benefit
